RELEASE DATE OF the Extended and Theatrical Limited Editions box sets of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King was 29 August 2006 (2 discs SRP US $28.98). In further news, Blu-ray releases of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions are apparently being held back at director Peter Jackson’s request so that he can prepare more elaborate Blu-ray releases of those, for debut closer to the theatrical and home video release of the two The Hobbit films (now due in late 20). That and, of course, the new Blu-ray sets feature HD-upgraded content plus Digital Copy. Interactive Entertainment’s forthcoming The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest videogame. Basically, only the original EA videogame preview trailers have been replaced by HD trailers for Warner Bros. Fans can (if they haven’t already) sell their DVD editions and not worry about losing any material. That’s great news for LotR fans since the Blu-ray release is a near-exact re-release of New Line’s original 2-disc DVD Theatrical Edition releases from late 2004. The box set slipcase includes: three BD discs of the films, three DVDs with legacy extras, plus three DVDs containing digital copies of each film. The North American Blu-ray release is 1080p HD video in 2.35:1 widescreen, with English audio in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and Dolby Surround, and English, English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles. The 9-disc The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy Blu-ray box set (SRP $99.98), includes the theatrical versions of the three films.
